FaceTime is great for getting email and keeping contacts. By default, FaceTime on your iPad will include the email that you set the iPad up with, but you can add more. If you have more than one email or number, the settings section is where you want to go.
It is very important that you know how to take care of your iPad. First of all, keep your iPad out of direct sunlight and don't leave it locked inside your hot car. This will decrease the performance of the battery. Also, never put the iPad in a place in which liquids may damage it. Buy a type of padded cover to add protection to the iPad.
If your whole family uses your iPad (children included) make good use of parental controls. Go to General settings tab and select "enable restrictions" to ban access to mature content. Children should always have parental guidance when online.

If you would rather not have Google as a default search engine, that can be changed. Go to the Settings menu, choose Safari and then choose Search Engine. You can use alternatives like Bing or Yahoo instead of Google.
Take good care of your iPad and it will last longer. For starters, be sure the iPad is never in direct sunlight. Also, don't keep inside of a hot car. This will decrease the performance of the battery. Avoid placing it near liquids. It's also a good idea to buy a cover that's padded so your iPad is more protected.
If you've got a frozen iPad, do a soft reset which will reboot the device. Hold down both the power and home buttons for a few seconds. Your device then restarts itself. Whenever you need to force the closure of an app, you can do so by holding down your device's home button for several seconds.

You can easily see what apps are running on your iPad. Lots of iPad applications can work in the background as you complete other tasks. You can easily see the running apps by double clicking the home button. Current apps will show up along the screen's bottom. After you have a chance to look through everything, simply swipe down and the bar will go away.
Do your eyes feel like they are straining when you read on the iPad? Remedy this by adjusting the brightness level of the screen. Access Brightness in the Settings, or use the slider in the iBook app to dim the level.

Are you sick of typing all of the time? Instead of typing, just dictate. Dictation can be turned on by pressing the key with a microphone symbol. Speak into the microphone, then press the key again. When you double click it, the words change to text, and you're able to change any error you made.
The latest operating system for the iPad supports folders. To start, hold your finger over and app until it jiggles. Then drag the jiggling app onto another icon and let go. This will create a folder with both apps. Then, you can rename the folder.
If you find your iPad isn't charging when plugged into the front of your computer, try plugging it into the back. USB outlets don't always have a lot of power, and front ports tend to be the lowest of the bunch. Another option would be to purchase the outlet USB adapter if it still will not work.

Taking pictures often means turning the iPad to the side. This makes your shutter button move, and you may start wobbling when trying to snap photos. Use the orientation lock. This setting will place the shutter button in a place that you can easily reach with your thumb. After you've snapped the picture, use the image editor and rotate the picture to your liking.
You don't have to tap the camera roll icon that's in the bottom-left of your screen to see a video or photo you've just taken. Instead, swipe right and your picture is there. Swipe in the other direction to see photos you took earlier.
Before letting other people search the web with your iPad's Safari search, make sure that you clear your history. You don't want people seeing personal, sensitive information. If you open Safari, it will automatically revert to your previous page, so change it if it's of a personal nature.
